Snakes - Pictures - Predation

Snakes feed on insects, fish, rodents and birds. Bigger species prey on rabbits and hares. They hide in dense grass or under sand in wait for the victim to come within striking range, which is half the length of their body. Fangs are not intended for chewing so snakes swallow prey whole. Some snakes capture game by wrapping around the victim's body and breaking its bones, using constrictive muscles. Venomous snakes neutralize the victim by shooting paralyzing poison into the prey's blood. Snakes do not attack unless they are disturbed or stepped on. Venomous snakes can be distinguished from other species by careful examination of fangs. Some venomous serpents are conspicuous by colorful patterns of skin.

Snakes - Pictures - Reproduction

Snakes usually lay eggs, but some species incubate eggs inside the body, some are viviparous (give birth to living offspring that develop within the mother's body). Females can store sperm for several years to come. The parents guard the eggs, but the young are not cared for by them.

Snakes - Pictures - The Importance of Snakes

There are some reasons for us to at least slightly change our common attitude toward snakes. As many farmers have observed, they act as perfect pest controllers and rodent-killers, thus preventing harvest from being destroyed. Snake venom can be used in medicine, particularly in production of antivenin. Skin is used in some items of clothes. Snakes are edible and are included in menus as a highly delicious meal (that is true of Asians). If you have met a snake, even a venomous one, don't kill it! Unless you alarm or hurt them, snakes are not going to alarm or hurt you!
